A genus of extinct marine reptiles, having a long neck, a small head, a short tail, and four large paddles; from the Lias and neighbouring formations; a reptile of this genus.

LXV. 420 The name I have originally [in 1821] given to this animal, Plesiosaurus (approximate to the Saurians), may appear rather vague in this state of our knowledge. 1833Sir C.
