‖ Pliolophus Palæont.|plaɪˈɒləfəs| [mod.L., f. Gr. πλείον more + λόϕος crest: see quot. 1857.] A genus of fossil perissodactyl hoofed quadrupeds, whose remains are found in the Middle and Lower Tertiary strata. Hence ˈplioloph, an animal of this genus; pliˈolophoid a., resembling this genus, or belonging to the Pliolophoidea or Pliolophidæ, of which it is the type; n. a pliolophoid animal.
1857Owen in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. XIV. 55 A new genus and species of perissodactyle pachyderm, for which I propose the name of Pliolophus vulpiceps, or Fox-headed Plioloph. Note.
