1. Phr. a mess of plottage, used disparagingly of theatrical productions (by analogy with a mess of pottage: see mess n. 2 a).

2. The size or value of a specified piece of land, regarded in terms of the area accumulated from its constituent plots. Usu. in plottage increment (see quot. 1965).
