arenavirus Microbiol.|əˈriːnəvaɪərəs| Also areno-. [f. L. arēnōsus sandy (see quot. 1970) + -o + virus; arena- by alteration (see quot. 1971).] Any of a group of animal viruses consisting of enveloped single-stranded RNA, of which many are carried by various rodents and some cause disease in man, including Lassa fever and lymphocytic choriomeningitis.
