[mod.L. (J. P. de Tournefort Institutiones Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 619), f. the name of M. de Poinci, a 17th-century governor of the Antilles + -ana.]
An evergreen tree or a deciduous prickly shrub of the genus formerly so called, now divided between Delonix and Cæsalpinia, belonging to the family Leguminosæ, native to the West Indies, Madagascar, or northern Africa, and bearing racemes of scarlet or yellow flowers.
