polyonym rare.|ˈpɒlɪənɪm| [ad. Gr. πολυώνυµ-ος: see polyonymous.] 1. Each of a number of different words having the same meaning; = synonym. rare or Obs.
1858Sat. Rev. 6 Mar. 241/1 The Stoics wished to substitute the term polyonyms for that of synonyms, and no reader of Plato will need to be reminded of the banter with which Prodicus is more than once assailed on account of his lectures on synonyms. 2. Proposed by Coues for: A scientific name (of a species, etc.) consisting of more than three terms.
1884Coues in Auk Oct. 321, I would therefore suggest and recommend as follows:—..Polyonym. An onym consisting of more than three terms. 3. Used by Buck for a technical term consisting of two or more words, as pia mater, ascending vena cava.
1889Buck's Handbk. Med. Sc. VIII. 518/1 There are two methods of securing mononyms from pre-existing polyonyms: A. By the omission of unessential words... B. By the compounding of two or more of the separate words. Ibid. 524/1 In reducing polyonyms to mononyms the retained word should be as distinctive as possible. So polyˈonymal, a. = polynomial A. 2; polyˈonymist = polynomialist. |
