porphyroxin, n. Chem.|pɔːfɪˈrɒksɪn| [a. F. porphyroxine (Merck 1837), f. Gr. πόρϕυρ-ος purple + -ox-, f. oxygen: see -in1.] ‘Name for a neutral crystallisable substance, composed of a mixture of alkaloids (laudanin, meconidin, etc.), obtained from opium’ (Syd. Soc. Lex. 1895).
