1. A hole made in the ground to receive the foot of a post. Also spec. Archæol., a hole orig. dug to receive a wooden post and usu. packed with stones or clay to support the post. Also attrib. in the name of implements serving to make such holes, as post-hole auger, post-hole borer, post-hole digger; also post-hole evidence, post-hole pattern.
