potarite Min.|pəˈtɑːraɪt| [f. the name of the Potaro River, Guyana, where first found: see -ite1.] Palladium amalgam, occurring as brittle, silvery grains and nuggets and reported to consist of two distinct phases.
1925W. India Committee Circular 22 Oct. 429/2 The second report deals with the occurrence of Palladium-Mercuride, a mineral new to science in British Guiana. Up to the present it has only been found in certain diamond-bearing gravels on the Potaro river; and so it was named ‘Potarite’. 1928Mineral. Mag. XXI. 397 He [sc. Sir John Harrison] proposed the name potarite (letter of April 3, 1925), but he did not himself record this name in print. 1960Amer. Mineralogist XLV. 1094 Samples of PdHg which are identical with the mineral potarite may be prepared either by displacement of palladium from Pd(NO3)2 solution by mercury or by direct synthesis from powdered palladium and mercury in sealed evacuated tubes. 1968I.
