▪ I. † pot-lead1 Obs. Used to render F. gluq, ‘a word used by Schollers of Paris, in derision of an absurd conclusion’ (Cotgr. s.v. Gluc).
1630S. Lennard tr. Charron's Wisd. iii. xiv. §19. 505 If he chance to speake, he entreth into a long discourse of definitions, and diuisions of Aristotle; ergo potlead [orig. F. ergo gluq]. ▪ II. pot-lead2, n.|ˈpɒtlɛd| [ad. Du. potlood black-lead, f. pot pot n.1 + lood lead.] A name for black-lead or graphite, esp. as used for coating the hulls of racing-yachts below the water-line so as to diminish the friction of the water. Hence ˌpot-ˈlead v. trans., to coat with pot-lead.
