Pott Med.|pɒt| The name of Sir Percivall Pott (1713–88), English physician, used in the possessive to designate phenomena described by him, as Pott's disease, a form of paraplegia caused by tuberculous disease of the spine (described in Med. & Philos. Commentaries (1779) VI. 318–24); Pott's fracture, a fracture of the fibula close to the ankle, of a type described by Pott (in Remarks on Fractures & Dislocations (1769) 57–64) and due to eversion of the foot; loosely, any fracture of the lower fibula.

XI. 600 The symptoms of Pott's disease may be divided into those referable to the diseased vertebræ, to the affected nerve roots of the spinal cord, and to the spinal cord itself. 1974C. B. T. Adams in R. M. Kirk et al. Surgery xiv. 286 Tuberculosis (Pott's disease..of the spine) or a pyogenic extrathecal abscess may also cause cord compression.

Smith exhibited a remarkable specimen of Pott's fracture, taken from the body of a man, aet. 70, who had lately died in the hospital of the South Union Poor House. 1884W. Pye Surg.
