Poulsen arc|ˈpəʊlsən ɑːk| [Named after its inventor, Valdemar Poulsen (1869–1942), Danish electrical engineer.] An arc discharge between a carbon electrode and a water-cooled copper electrode operated in an atmosphere of hydrogen or hydrocarbon vapour and a strong magnetic field in order to make possible the emission of waves short enough to be used for radiotelegraphy.
