Antecedent to consciousness, or to conscious action of some specified kind. spec. in Psychol., applied to memories and emotions existing at a deeper level than, or of a type different from, immediate memory or conscious thought, but which are accessible to and capable of being brought directly into consciousness; also absol. Cf. fore-conscious a. (n.) and quot. 1958.
