pregangliˈonic, a. Anat. [pre- B. 3.] Of a nerve of the autonomic nervous system: running from the central nervous system to a ganglion.
1895Jrnl. Physiol. XVIII. 280 (heading) Note on regeneration of præ-ganglionic fibres of the sympathetic. 1897Ibid. XXII. 223 The regeneration of post-ganglionic fibres presents a somewhat similar problem to that we have considered in relation to the pre-ganglionic fibres. 1903Brain XXVI. 5 The nerve fibres which leave the central nervous system are all pre-ganglionic fibres; they end in connection with nerve cells in the ganglia, and these give off post-ganglionic nerve-fibres which end in the tissues. 1946Nature 19 Oct. 556/1 Single shocks at low intensity delivered to the preganglionic nerve excite a single giant fibre therein. 1972[see intermediolateral a.]. 1974M. C. Gerald Pharmacol. v. 93 Conversely preganglionic sympathetic fibers are generally short, with long postganglionic fibers arising from the ganglion to the innervated tissues. Hence pregangliˈonically adv.
