prostacyclin Biochem.|prɒstəˈsaɪklɪn| [f. as next + cyclic a. + -in1.] A derivative of prostaglandin F1α which is generated by the arterial walls from prostaglandins and is an anti-coagulant and vasodilator.
1976R. A. Johnson et al. Prostaglandins XII. 915 The chemical structure of prostaglandin X..from prostaglandin endoperoxides, is 9-deoxy-6,9α-epoxy-Δ5-PGF1α... The trivial name prostacyclin is proposed for [this]. 1977Lancet 1 Jan. 18/1 Fresh rings of arteries and veins obtained from surgical specimens generated an unstable substance, prostacyclin (prostaglandin X..) which is a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation. 1979Nature 6 Sept. 14/3 Many papers dealt with the newly discovered prostacyclin. Because of its vasodilator and platelet antiaggregating properties it has already been tested for treatment of peripheral artery diseases. 1980Brit. Med. Jrnl. 29 Mar. 939/3 The enhanced platelet release reaction in patients with poor prognosis may be related to decreased prostacyclin activity. |
