rhapis, n. Bot.|ˈreɪpɪs| [mod.L., f. Gr. ῥαπίς rod.] Any of various south-east Asian dwarf palms of the genus Rhapis (family Palmae), having a slender stem, leaves deeply divided into narrow, ribbed segments, and yellowish flowers; spec. the ground-rattan, R. excelsa, which is much cultivated, esp. in Japan, for its variegated foliage.
