1. The seventeenth letter of the Greek alphabet, ρ, ρ.

2. Statistics. Used to represent a coefficient of correlation calculated from the ranks of the data and answering to the product-moment coefficient.
[1910C. Spearman in Brit. Jrnl. Psychol. III. 287 He [sc. K. Pearson] has worked out the relation between the coefficients of ranks..and those of measurements, assuming Gaussian distribution. It is r = 2 sin (πρ/6), where ρ denotes the coefficient for ranks. ]1940R. S. Woodworth Psychol. (ed. 12) iii. 89 ‘Rho’ is a measure of correlation, known as the rank-difference measure. 1949Q. 3. Physics. In full rho meson. A meson with zero hypercharge, unit isospin, unit spin, and negative parity that has a mass of about 770 MeV (1506 times that of the electron) and on decaying usu. produces two pions. Freq. represented by ρ.
