‖ Protococcus Bot.|prəʊtəʊˈkɒkəs| Pl. protococci |-ˈkɒksaɪ|. [f. Gr. πρῶτο-ς first, primary (see proto-) + κόκκος grain, seed.] A genus of microscopic unicellular algæ, of spheroidal form. The common species P. viridis is abundant everywhere on trunks of trees, old palings, walls, etc., forming green patches or layers; P. nivalis is an alpine species constituting the so-called ‘red snow’.
