rhythmite Geol.|ˈrɪðmaɪt| [ad. G. rhythmit (B. Sander 1936, in Mineral. und petrogr. Mitt. XLVIII. 190) f. rhythm(us rhythm n. + -it -ite1.] Each of the repeated units in a sedimentary formation exhibiting a rhythmic structure; spec. a varve.
1946Prof. Paper U.S. Geol. Survey No. 212. 30/2 The word ‘rhythmite’, used by Sander for the individual units of rhythmic beds, will be adopted here as a brief term to designate the couplet of distinct sedimentary types of rock, or the graded sequence of sediments, that form a unit bed or lamina in rhythmically bedded deposits. 1951E. B. Knopf tr. Sander's Contributions to Study of Depositional Fabrics 135 We have the same need for names to denote rocks of this sort (possibly rhythmites) as we had for tectonites and similar names. [Translator's note] It has been suggested by A. Knopf that ‘laminites’ might be a better term than ‘rhythmites’ in order to avoid the positive implication of perfect periodicity in the recurrence of laminae. 1969Bennison & Wright Geol. Hist. Brit. Isles xvi. 361 In lake deposits counting of seasonally banded deposits, varves (or rhythmites)..can be used for dating such sediments up to 10,000 years old. 1976Nature 18 Mar. 235/1 The rhythmites make up a regular series of plane beds with only occasional discontinuities caused by local penecontemporaneous erosion and minor faulting. |
