The outer part of the bark of a woody plant, composed of layers of dead phloem and cork.

XII. 18/1 The bark or rhytidome is..a very complex structure, consisting of the secondary epidermal tissues either formed in the primary cortex alone or deep in the other tissues, and popularly it includes all the tissues outside the cambium layer. 1896W.
