A jet engine deriving its propulsive power from the combustion of fuel in a duct or tube into which air is admitted and compressed as a result of forward speed. Now usu. called ram-jet.
1945Westinghouse Engineer Mar. 51/1 The continuous-firing duct engine is relatively little known but is credited to Lorin of France in 1913.
