[f. Gr. αὐτόµολος going by oneself, subst. ‘a deserter’ (f. αὐτο- by oneself + µολεῖν to come, go) + -ite; so named by Ekeberg (1806) in allusion to the unexpected appearance of zinc in connexion with spinel.]
A variety of zinc-spinel or gahnite.
