A local name in part of the Soviet Union for the guinea-worm (Dracunculus medinensis), a common parasite of man and other mammals, and the disease which it produces.
1834A. Burnes Trav. Bokhara II. 180 Among the diseases of Bokhara, the most distressing is the guinea-worm, or Dracunculus, here called ‘rishtu’: it is confined to the city. The inhabitants believe that the disease arises from drinking the water of the cisterns in summer, when they become fetid and infested with animalculæ.1885H. Lansdell Russ.
