[Of obscure origin; the 18th c. forms point to ME. ū as in stoop v.1 Probably this and stout and rout in quot. c 1375 are corruptions of some rhyming phrase, of which perh. only the first word was significant. Cf. Da. rub og stub (Norw. rubb og stubb, Sw. rubb och stubb) and the Sc. and north. dial. stump and rump in the same sense.]
