basan, bazan|ˈbæzən| Also 8 bazin. [a. F. basane, (Cotgr. bazane, Palsgr. basanne), prob. ad. Pr. *bazana, a. Sp. badana (med.L. bedana), ad. Arab. biṭānah, lining, ‘inside’; see also the Eng. corruption basil n.3, bazil.] Sheep-skin tanned in oak- or larch-bark; distinguished from roan, which is tanned in sumach.
