rotenone Chem.|ˈrəʊtənəʊn| Orig. † -on. [ad. Jap. rotenon (K. Nagai 1902, in Jrnl. Tokyo Chem. Soc. XXIII. 753), f. roten derris: see -one.] A toxic crystalline polycyclic ketone, C23H22O6, obtained from the roots of several species of plant (notably derris, cubé, and timbo), which is widely employed as an insecticide in the form of a powder or an emulsified spray. Also as v. trans., to treat with rotenone.
