psilocybin Chem.|saɪləʊˈsaɪbɪn| [a. G. psilocybin (A. Hofmann et al. 1958, in Experientia XIV. 108), f. mod.L. psilocybe (see below), f. Gr. ψῑλός bare, smooth + κύβη head: see -in1.] An alkaloid, C12H15N2O·H2PO3, which is the phosphate ester of psilocin and is the hallucinogen present in several Central American species of mushroom (notably Psilocybe mexicana), producing effects similar to those of LSD but less strongly and for a shorter time.
