royal oak 1. A sprig of oak worn to commemorate the restoration of Charles II in 1660. Hence Royal Oak Day, the 29th of May, Oak Apple Day. (Now only in local use.) The name of ‘the Royal Oak’ was given to the tree at Boscobel in Shropshire, in which Charles II hid himself during his flight after the battle of Worcester in 1651.
