bentonite Min.|ˈbɛntənaɪt| [f. Benton (see below) + -ite1.] A clay found in the Fort Benton strata of the Cretaceous of Wyoming. Also, any of several clayey deposits containing montmorillonite which have various practical applications (see quots.).
