[L. sacrārium, f. sacr-, sacer sacred, holy: see -arium.]
1. Roman Antiq. Any place in which sacred objects were deposited and kept; the adytum of a temple; also, a small apartment in a house where the images of the penates were kept.
‘In the time of the emperors, the name sacrarium was sometimes applied to a place in which a statue of an emperor was erected’ (Smith's Dict. Grk. & Rom. Antiq., 1842, s.v.).

2. Eccl.
a. That part of a church immediately surrounding the altar or communion table; also called the sanctuary.
