ˈsand-grouse [sand n.2] Any bird of the group Pteroclomorphæ, inhabiting sandy tracts of the old world, consisting of two genera Pterocles (esp. P. arenarius, the Sand-grouse proper, and P. alchata, the Pin-tailed Sand-grouse) and Syrrhaptes.
