‖ pulveratrix Ornith. rare.|pʌlvəˈreɪtrɪks| Pl. -aˈtrices. [mod.L., fem. of pulverātor, agent-n. from pulverāre to powder (sc. avis bird); in F. pulvératrice (Littré).] A bird which cleanses itself by wallowing in dust. Cf. Aristotle's κονιστικοί, Hist. Anim. 9. 49b, 10.
1770G. White Selborne 8 Oct., Ray remarks that birds of the Gallinæ order, as cocks and hens, partridges and pheasants, are pulveratrices, such as dust themselves... Common house-sparrows are great pulveratrices, being frequently seen grovelling and wallowing in dusty roads. |
