‖ saphir d'eau|safir do| Also sapphir(e) d'eau. [Fr., lit. ‘sapphire of water’.] A translucent blue variety of cordierite occurring in Sri Lanka; = water-sapphire. In Fr. the term was orig. used by mineralogists to refer to blue quartz.
