A dangerous stretch of water where the waves break over a submerged reef of rocks.
1933Bulletin (Sydney) 24 May 27/1 ‘Bombora’ is an aboriginal word applied to the high-crested wave which breaks, even on windless days, over submerged rocks near the coastline and in some cases at entrances to coastal harbors and inlets.1945Baker Austral.
