A dangerous stretch of water where the waves break over a submerged reef of rocks.
1933Bulletin (Sydney) 24 May 27/1 ‘Bombora’ is an aboriginal word applied to the high-crested wave which breaks, even on windless days, over submerged rocks near the coastline and in some cases at entrances to coastal harbors and inlets. 1945Baker Austral. Lang. xiii. 224 Bomboora to describe a dangerous reef of rocks usually found at the foot of cliffs.
