boo-ay N.Z. and Austral. colloq.|ˈbuːaɪ| Also boo-ai, booeye, boohai. [? f. place-name Puhoi, N. Auckland.] Remote rural districts. Phr. up the boo-ay, completely astray, altogether wrong. The word is much older but has not been found in printed sources earlier than 1955.
