ˈsaw-fly [saw n.1] An insect of the family Tenthredinidæ, distinguished by the saw-like construction of the ovipositor. The saw-flies are very destructive to vegetation, and several species are designated from the plants attacked by them, as pine saw-fly, rose saw-fly, turnip saw-fly.
