brevicite Min.|ˈbrɛvɪsaɪt| [ad. Sw. brevicit (Berzelius 1834, in Arsberättelse om Framstegen i Fysik och Kemi (1834) 179), f. Brevig (now Brevik), a town in Norway: see -ite1.] Natrolite, as found in certain parts of Norway.
1836T. Thomson Outl. Min., Geol., etc. (ed. 7) I. 680 Brevicite. This name has been given by Berzelius to a mineral sent him by M. Strom, from Brevig, in Norway, which appears to have filled up an amygdaloidal cavity in a trachyte-looking rock. 1892Dana's Syst. Min. (ed. 6) 602 Brevicite is the same as spreustein, though the name has also been used as synonymous with radiolite. Ibid., Radiolite, bergmannite, spreustein, brevicite, palæo-natrolite, are names which have been given to the natrolite from the augite-syenite of southern Norway,..where it occurs fibrous, massive, and in long prismatic crystallizations. |
