butea|ˈbjuːtiːə| [mod.L. (W. Roxburgh 1792, in Asiatick Researches III. 469), named after John Stuart, Earl of Bute (1713–92).] A member of a genus of Indian or Chinese trees or climbers so named, belonging to the family Leguminosæ; esp. Butea frondosa, the dhak or palas of India. Also the resin of these trees (in full butea gum).
