Used in various med. Latin phrases, sometimes occurring in Eng. contexts. secundum artem (= Gr. κατὰ τὴν τέχνην): ‘according to art’, in accordance with the rules of the art (chiefly of medicine; often jocularly transf.). secundum idem, ‘according to the same argument, calculation, etc.’, in the same manner or respect. secundum magis et minus (= Gr. κατὰ τὸ µᾶλλον καὶ ἧττον): ‘according to more and less’; in a quantitative manner or respect; in various degrees. secundum naturam [Cicero; = Gr. κατὰ ϕύσιν]: according to nature, naturally. secundum quid [= Gr. κατά τι]: ‘according to something’, in some particular respect only (opposed to simpliciter, Gr. ἁπλῶς).
