calicivirus, n. Virol. Brit. |ˈkeɪlɪsɪˌvʌɪrəs|, |kaˈliːsɪˌvʌɪrəs|, |kaˈliːtʃɪˌvʌɪrəs|, U.S. |ˈkeɪləsiˌvaɪrəs|, |kəˈlisiˌvaɪrəs| [‹ classical Latin calic-, calix cup (see calix n.) + -i- connective + virus n. Compare caliciform adj.] Any of a group (formerly the genus Calicivirus, now the family Caliciviridae) of non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses which have a capsid with distinctive cup-like depressions, and which are pathogens of humans and various other mammals. Also (in form Calicivirus): the (former) genus itself. The family Caliciviridae consists of the genera Lagovirus (rabbit haemorrhagic fever and related viruses), Vesivirus (vesicular exanthema of swine virus and feline calicivirus), and the 'Norwalk-like viruses' and 'Sapporo-like viruses', which cause epidemic gastroenteritis in humans.
