[Late L. pylōrus the lower orifice of the stomach (Cæl. Aurel. 5th c.), a. Gr. πυλωρός, πυλουρός gatekeeper, porter, f. πύλη gate + οὖρος watcher, warder.]
The opening from the stomach into the duodenum, which is guarded by a strong sphincter muscle; also, that part of the stomach where it is situated.

b. An analogous part in invertebrates; e.g. the posterior opening of the stomach in insects; also, the valvular structure which separates the gastric from the somatic cavity in the siphonophorous hydrozoans (the pyloric valve of Huxley).
