pyrotartaric, a. Chem.|ˌpaɪərəʊtɑːˈtærɪk| [f. pyro- 3 a + tartaric: cf. F. pyrotartarique, substituted for pyrotartareux (De Morveau and Lavoisier 1787).] In pyrotartaric acid, C5H8O4, a colourless crystalline substance, obtained by the dry distillation of tartaric acid. So pyrotartaric anhydride, C5H6O3; pyrotartaric ether, etc.

(ed. 7) II. 208 From the experiments of Fourcroy and Vauquelin, it appears that the pyrotartaric acid is a peculiar species. 1819J. G. Children Chem. Anal. 280 Pyrotartaric acid..is solid, extremely acid to the taste, and reddens vegetable blues strongly. 1866Odling Anim. Chem. 36 Diatomic Fatty Acid Series: C5H8O4 Pyrotartric. Hence pyroˈtartranil, C11H11NO2, formed by heating aniline with the acid; pyrotartraˈnilic acid, C11H13NO3 (hence pyrotarˈtranilate, a salt of this); pyroˈtartrate, a salt of pyrotartaric acid; pyroˈtartrimide, the imide of this acid; and other derivatives. Also † pyro-ˈtartarous, -tarˈtareous a. = pyrotartaric; † pyroˈtartarite, -ˈtartrite = pyrotartrate.
1790Kerr tr. Lavoisier's Elem. Chem. 261 The name of Pyro-tartarous acid is given to a dilute empyreumatic acid obtained from purified acidulous tartarite of potash by distillation in a naked fire. c1790tr.
