the stem of set v.1 in comb., chiefly in ns. derived from phr. with advs. (see set v.1 XII.): set-forth, a setting forth, departure; set-in, the beginning of a period of time, a spell of weather, or the like; set-on, the way in which a thing is set on. See also set-back, set-down, set-to, set-up, etc. Also set-fair, the second coat in plastering; set-hands, applied to devices connected with setting the hands of a watch or clock; set-ope dial. [ope a. and n.], a device for holding open a gate, window, etc. (? obs.); set-screw, a screw that enables two contiguous parts to be brought into and held in their correct relative position, and is usually threaded the full length of the shank; in names of devices for adjusting or shaping, set-bolt, -hammer, -stud (see quots.). See also setfast.
