Seyfert Astr.|ˈseɪfɜːt| The name of Carl K. Seyfert (1911–60), U.S. astronomer, who first described such galaxies in 1943 (Astrophysical Jrnl. XCVII. 28), used attrib. with reference to a class of galaxies characterized by bright compact cores that show strong infra-red emission.
1959Astrophysical Jrnl. CXXX. 26 Another characteristic feature of many of the Seyfert galaxies is the apparently small size of their nuclei in which the broad emission features arise. 1963Ibid. CXXXVII. 1032 It is possible that an event of the Seyfert type is experienced by all spiral galaxies and not only by the Sa and Sb systems. We believe this to be a reasonable assumption, but it has the effect only of reducing the frequency of Seyfert objects among spirals by a factor of 2 or less. 1969Ibid. CLVIII. 859 The detection of such [nonstellar] absorption features in Seyfert spectra is rather difficult. 1970Nature 31 Jan. 410/2 Seyfert galaxies with their extraordinarily bright and unusual nuclei could easily be intermediaries between quasars and normal galaxies. 1970Sci. Jrnl. Feb. 57/1 Many of the phenomena observed in Seyfert galaxies are similar to those seen in quasi⁓stellar objects. 1971New Scientist 17 June 695/1 A compact infrared source with a spectrum similar to that of the Seyfert nuclei, but with a smaller energy output.., appears to be located at the centre of our Galaxy. b. absol. A Seyfert galaxy.
1968Physical Rev. Lett. XXI. 1540/1 NGC1275 and 3C120..are a hundred times more luminous in the radio than most of the Seyferts. 1977Dædalus Fall 56 The association of X-ray emitters with active compact galaxies..has been confirmed by the discovery of an X-ray emission by the Seyfert galaxy 3C120..and of a dozen more Seyferts by Pounds and his associates working with Ariel-5. |
