The name of Kiyoshi Shiga (1870–1957), Japanese bacteriologist, who discovered this bacterium in 1898, used attrib. and in the possessive to denote the Gram-negative bacterium Shigella dysenteriæ, which causes dysentery in man, and the toxin produced by it.
