clethra|ˈkliːθrə, ˈklɛθrə| [mod.L. (J. F. Gronovius in Linnæus's Genera Plantarum (1737) 127), f. Gr. κλήθρα alder, which it resembles in foliage.] A plant of a genus of small trees or shrubs, belonging to the family Clethraceæ and native to eastern America and Asia.
