Silsbee Physics.|ˈsɪlzbiː| The name of Francis Briggs Silsbee (1889–1967), American physicist, used attrib. and in the possessive with reference to the phenomenon (discovered by Kamerlingh Onnes and explained by Silsbee) of the destruction of the superconducting properties of a superconductor when a current exceeding a certain critical value (the Silsbee current) is passed through it.
1926Jrnl. Franklin Inst. CCI. 407 As is demanded for the correctness of Silsbee's hypothesis the supra-conductivity, which was disturbed by exceeding the threshold current, was restored by applying an external magnetic field. 1932Proc. R. Soc. A. CXXXVI. 65 There remained the possibility..that the effect was a manifestation of the Silsbee effect, in which the current through the super-conductor produces, by its own magnetic field, a depression of the critical temperature. 1968C. G. Kuper Introd. Theory Superconductivity v. 89 If a current I in excess of the Silsbee current..is passed through a cylindrical wire.., some destruction of superconductivity must occur. 1975M. Tinkham Introd. Superconductivity iii. 99 Silsbee's rule that the critical current cannot exceed that which produces a critical magnetic field at the superconductor. |
