closed caption, n. orig. and chiefly N. Amer. Brit. |ˌkləʊzd ˈkapʃn|, U.S. |ˌkloʊzd ˈkæpʃ(ə)n| [‹ closed adj. + caption n., after closed captioning n.] A type of subtitle for television programmes (often providing information on sound effects, music, etc., as well as speech), optionally displayed and accessible through a decoder (now usually integral to the television).
