‖ cochlea|ˈkɒkliːə| [a. L. coclea, cochlea snail, snail-shell, screw, water-screw, ad. Gr. κοχλίας of same meanings.] †1. a. A spiral staircase [so Gr. κοχλίας]. b. A screw. c. The water-screw of Archimedes.
