▸ Columbus Day n. the twelfth of October as a celebration and public holiday, held in the U.S. and in some other parts of North and South America in commemoration of Columbus's first landing in the Americas on 12 October 1492. In 1892, the anniversary was reckoned according to the Old Style calendar, and celebrated on the twenty-first of October; in subsequent practice, it came to be observed on the second Monday in October.
